PBIS Sort It! Aha or Oops? – Cafeteria Edition
Turn cafeteria expectations into an engaging, hands-on PBIS lesson with PBIS Sort It! Aha or Oops? – Cafeteria Edition!
The cafeteria is one of the busiest parts of the school day—and one of the places where students need clear expectations for safety, respect, responsibility, and self-control. This interactive sorting game helps students practice those expectations using realistic situations they encounter while getting lunch, eating, cleaning up, and interacting with others.
Students read each behavior card and decide:
Is it an “Aha!” choice that shows safe, respectful, and responsible cafeteria behavior—or an “Oops!” choice that needs to change?
Students then place the card on the colorful sorting board and explain their reasoning, transforming a simple activity into meaningful PBIS discussion and reflection.
The included scenarios address important cafeteria behaviors such as using an appropriate conversational voice, cleaning up crumbs and spills, remaining seated until dismissed, walking safely, using polite language with cafeteria staff, and waiting appropriately in line. - A mix of positive “Aha!” choices and inappropriate “Oops!” choices

How to Play
Print, cut, and laminate the cards for repeated use.
Place the Aha! / Oops! sorting board where students can easily see and reach it.
Choose one behavior card at a time and read it aloud.
Students decide whether the behavior belongs on:
Aha! – Great Choice
or
Oops! – A Choice That Needs to Change
After placing the card, ask students to explain why they selected that category.
For every Oops! behavior, challenge students to answer:
“How could we turn this Oops into an Aha?”
For example:
“Run to be first in the lunch line” becomes
“Walk safely and wait your turn.”
This additional step helps students move beyond simply identifying inappropriate behavior and begin thinking about the positive replacement behavior they should use instead.

Game Variations
Aha or Oops? Quick Sort

Prove It!
Students earn the card only after correctly sorting it and explaining why.
Fix the Oops!
Students select an Oops! card and verbally change it into an appropriate Aha! behavior.
Act It Out
Students act out a cafeteria situation while classmates determine whether it is an Aha or Oops choice.
What Could Happen?
Students describe a possible consequence of the behavior.
For example:
“What could happen if someone runs through the cafeteria?”
“How does cleaning up a spill help keep other students safe?”
Safe, Respectful, or Responsible?
After sorting the behavior, students determine which PBIS expectation it demonstrates. Many behaviors may fit more than one category.

Why Teachers Will Love It
The cafeteria can be difficult to practice in while students are actually eating lunch. PBIS Sort It! Cafeteria Edition gives teachers an opportunity to teach and discuss those expectations in a calm classroom setting before students are expected to use them independently.
Rather than simply memorizing cafeteria rules, students are asked to identify, sort, explain, correct, and reflect on behavior choices.
The simple Aha! versus Oops! format is easy for elementary students to understand while still allowing for deeper conversations about how individual choices affect safety, cleanliness, staff members, classmates, and the overall cafeteria environment.
Print it, laminate it, and use it throughout the year to help students remember:
Make good choices. Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible.
