PBIS Sort It! Aha or Oops? – Classroom Edition
$5.00
PBIS Sort It! Aha or Oops? – Classroom Edition
Make classroom expectations more than a list of rules with PBIS Sort It! Aha or Oops? – Classroom Edition, an engaging behavior-sorting activity that gets students thinking, talking, and making better choices.
Instead of simply telling students what they should and should not do, this interactive PBIS game gives students realistic classroom situations and asks them to decide: Is this an Aha! choice or an Oops! choice?
Students sort each behavior onto the colorful Aha! or Oops! game board and then explain the reasoning behind their choice. The activity reinforces the PBIS expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible while helping students connect those expectations to situations they experience every day in the classroom.
The included scenarios address important classroom behaviors such as raising a hand before speaking, beginning work when directions are given, keeping work areas organized, using an appropriate voice level, and listening when classmates are sharing. PBIS Sort It- Classroom-final
What Students Practice
Students work through realistic classroom choices involving participation, independent work, organization, materials, peer interactions, movement, technology, and personal responsibility.
Examples include asking a neighbor for help appropriately, returning materials to the correct bins, using kind words during group work, walking safely through the classroom, caring for devices, checking work before turning it in, and staying on task even when the teacher is working with another group. Just as importantly, students analyze common “Oops!” behaviors such as calling out, leaving trash on the floor, distracting classmates, taking supplies without permission, running across the room, leaving devices on the floor, wandering instead of working, and leaning back in a chair. How to Use PBIS Sort It!
Print, cut, and laminate the materials for repeated use. Place the Aha! / Oops! sorting board in front of students and select one behavior card at a time.
Read the behavior aloud or have a student read it. Students decide whether the behavior represents an Aha! great choice or an Oops! choice that needs to be changed.
After sorting the card, require students to explain their thinking. For Oops! cards, ask students to identify what the person could do differently.
This extra discussion turns a simple sorting activity into meaningful PBIS instruction.
Ways to Play and Differentiate
-
Whole-Class PBIS Lesson: Display the board and complete the activity together. Have students vote Aha or Oops before discussing the answer.
-
Small-Group Practice: Give a group the board and cards and have students take turns reading, sorting, and explaining.
-
Partner Sort: One partner places the card while the other explains whether they agree.
-
Morning Meeting: Use a few cards each day as quick behavior discussion prompts.
-
PBIS Booster: Bring the activity back after weekends, vacations, schedule changes, or whenever classroom expectations need reinforcement.
-
Center or Station: Laminate the set and place it in a PBIS, SEL, classroom management, or social skills center.
-
Fix the Oops: Every time students draw an Oops! card, they must explain how to turn the behavior into an Aha! choice.
-
Prove It: Students earn the card only when they can correctly sort it and explain why.
-
Act It Out: A student acts out the scenario while classmates decide whether it demonstrates an Aha or Oops behavior.
-
What Happens Next?: Students identify a likely consequence of the behavior and explain how it might affect classmates or learning.
-
Safe, Respectful, or Responsible?: After sorting the card, students identify which PBIS expectation it demonstrates. Some behaviors may fit more than one.
-
Team Challenge: Teams earn one point for sorting correctly and another point for providing a strong explanation.
-
Turn the Oops Around: Give students only the Oops! cards and challenge them to restate every situation as an appropriate classroom behavior.
-
Create Your Own: After playing, have students develop new classroom Aha! and Oops! examples based on situations they experience during the school day.
Perfect for Beginning-of-Year and Beyond
This resource works especially well for beginning-of-year classroom expectations, PBIS lessons, behavior refreshers, morning meetings, SEL instruction, classroom community building, small groups, centers, substitute plans, and reteaching after school breaks.
It can also be used proactively before problems occur. Pull out a few cards before independent work, group projects, transitions, technology use, or other parts of the day when students may benefit from a quick reminder.
Why Teachers Will Love It
PBIS Sort It! Classroom Edition transforms behavior expectations into an activity students can actively participate in rather than another set of rules they simply hear or read.
Students are asked to identify, classify, explain, correct, and reflect on behavior choices. That makes the activity useful not only for teaching expectations, but also for building classroom discussion, decision-making, problem-solving, accountability, and a shared PBIS vocabulary.
The bright Aha! versus Oops! format makes the concept easy for elementary students to understand while still allowing teachers to have deeper conversations about why a behavior is appropriate and how individual choices affect the entire classroom community.
Print it, laminate it, and keep it ready for use throughout the year whenever your students need a fun, meaningful reminder that better choices create better learning days!
