PBIS Sort It! Aha or Oops? – Hallway Edition
Turn hallway expectations into an engaging, hands-on PBIS lesson with PBIS Sort It! Aha or Oops? – Hallway Edition!
Hallways are shared spaces where students need to move safely, respect nearby classrooms, follow directions, and make responsible choices—even when no one is directly reminding them what to do. This interactive sorting activity helps students think through realistic hallway situations and decide:
Is this an “Aha!” choice that demonstrates safe, respectful, and responsible behavior—or an “Oops!” choice that needs to change?
Students sort each behavior card onto the colorful Aha! / Oops! sorting board, explain their reasoning, and discuss what the better choice would look like.
The set reinforces important hallway expectations such as walking on the right side, keeping hands and feet to yourself, using a silent or whisper voice, stopping at designated markers, and facing forward while walking in line. PBIS Sort It- In the Hallway-Fi…
What’s Included
This Hallway Edition includes:
- Full-color PBIS Sort It! Aha or Oops? materials
- Large Aha! / Oops! sorting board
- Hallway behavior sorting cards
- Positive “Aha!” behaviors and inappropriate “Oops!” behaviors
- Bright, kid-friendly hallway and school graphics
- Realistic situations involving walking in line, lockers, doors, voice levels, personal space, transitions, classroom areas, and school property
- A versatile activity that can be used for whole-group instruction, small groups, partners, centers, or PBIS booster lessons
Students practice recognizing positive choices such as holding the door for someone behind them, keeping a safe distance from the person in front, picking up trash, and walking around a group instead of pushing through it. PBIS Sort It- In the Hallway-Fi…
They also identify inappropriate or unsafe behaviors such as walking backward, letting doors slam, stepping on another student’s heels, kicking trash down the hallway, or stopping in the middle of a busy walkway. PBIS Sort It- In the Hallway-Fi…
How to Play
Print, cut, and laminate the materials for repeated use.
Place the Aha! / Oops! sorting board where students can easily see and reach it.
Choose one behavior card at a time and read it aloud.
Students decide whether the behavior belongs on:
Aha! – Great Choice
or
Oops! – A Choice That Needs to Change
After sorting the card, ask students to explain why they selected that category.
For every Oops! behavior, challenge students to answer:
“How could we turn this Oops into an Aha?”
For example:
“Run to get to your next class” becomes
“Walk at a steady, calm pace to your destination.”
This additional step helps students identify the positive replacement behavior instead of simply learning what not to do.
Ways to Use PBIS Sort It!
Whole-Class PBIS Lesson
Display the sorting board and work through the cards together. Have students vote Aha or Oops before discussing each situation.
Beginning-of-Year Hallway Expectations
Use the game when explicitly teaching procedures and transitions during the first days of school.
Before a Transition
Choose one or two cards before leaving the classroom for specials, lunch, recess, assemblies, or dismissal.
Morning Meeting
Use several cards as quick discussion prompts about safety, respect, responsibility, and awareness of others.
Small-Group Game
Students take turns reading, sorting, and explaining the behavior cards.
Partner Practice
One student sorts the card while the other explains whether they agree and why.
PBIS Booster Lesson
Bring the game back whenever hallway behavior needs reinforcement.
After-Break Refresher
Use the set after vacations or long weekends when school routines need a reset.
Center or Station Activity
Laminate the materials and place them in a PBIS, SEL, social skills, or classroom management center.
Game Variations
Aha or Oops? Quick Sort
Students sort all of the hallway behavior cards into the two categories.
Prove It!
Students earn the card only after correctly sorting it and explaining why.
Fix the Oops!
Students choose an Oops! card and restate it as an appropriate Aha! behavior.
For example:
“Shout to a friend at the other end of the hallway” becomes
“Use a silent or whisper voice while traveling through the hallway.”
Act It Out
Students act out a hallway behavior while classmates decide whether it demonstrates an Aha or Oops choice.
What Could Happen?
Students discuss possible consequences of each behavior.
Ask questions such as:
“What could happen if someone runs in a crowded hallway?”
“Why is it important to leave space between yourself and the person in front of you?”
“How does being quiet in the hallway show respect for other classrooms?”
Safe, Respectful, or Responsible?
After sorting the behavior, students identify which PBIS expectation it demonstrates. Many situations may connect to more than one expectation.
Team Challenge
Divide the class into teams and award:
- 1 point for sorting correctly
- 1 point for explaining why
- 1 bonus point for turning an Oops into an Aha
Hallway Role-Play
Create classroom practice situations such as:
Walking to specials
Passing another class
Opening a hallway door
Walking past lockers
Carrying classroom materials
Traveling independently to another location
Students demonstrate what the appropriate hallway behavior should look and sound like.
Turn Every Oops Around
Give students only the Oops! cards and challenge them to restate every situation as a positive hallway expectation.
Create-a-Card
Have students create additional Aha and Oops examples based on your school’s specific hallway procedures.

Perfect For
Beginning-of-year procedures, PBIS lessons, hallway expectations, school-wide behavior instruction, transition practice, morning meetings, SEL lessons, social skills instruction, small groups, centers, substitute plans, behavior refreshers, and reteaching expectations throughout the school year.
Why Teachers Will Love It
Hallway behavior affects more than the students who are transitioning—it affects classrooms, teachers, staff, and everyone sharing the building.
PBIS Sort It! Hallway Edition gives students an opportunity to actively think about what successful hallway behavior looks and sounds like before they are expected to demonstrate it independently.
Instead of simply memorizing hallway rules, students are asked to identify, sort, explain, correct, and reflect on realistic behavior choices.
The easy-to-understand Aha! versus Oops! format opens the door for meaningful conversations about safety, personal space, respecting learning environments, protecting school property, and moving through the building responsibly.
Print it, laminate it, and use it throughout the year to reinforce one simple message:
Walk safely. Stay focused. Respect learning. Make great choices in the hallway!
